[texts]The White Chief - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
An exciting and well-written book by Mayne Reid based on his experiences during the war between America and Mexico in the 1840s. Reid took the title of "Captain" because that was what his men called him during that war, although he was never promoted to that rank. The importance of Reid's books with this background is that they were among the first in the Wild West genre.

[texts]The Hunters' Feast - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
The story starts in the city of St. Louis, towards the end of the summer of some year in the nineteenth century. Reid collects together a group of six men who would pay to take part in an expedition, camping and hunting, into the prairies. They take with them a couple of paid men, professionals who would give them very necessary guidance. They all make a pact that they would each tell a round of tales around the camp fire, such stories to be amusing and instructive...

[texts]Quadrupeds - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
This is a fairly short book, but it certainly hits the spot, for its aim is to inform young people about the four-legged animals of our planet, and this it does very competently. Of course there is no reason why young ladies should not read this book: I am sure they would enjoy this just as much Reid's target readership, which was boys. There are 24 chapters, each dealing with a kind of animal. Sometimes an animal genus is given two chapters, for instance domestic dogs, and wild dogs...

[texts]Gaspar the Gaucho - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
This is another excellent book by the inventor of the Wild West genre. Set in South America, in Paraguay, the hero and his band of friends have many an adventure, just in the course of one voyage, or undertaking. They frequently get themselves into dangerous and risky situations, but always by their superior bush-craft manage to get themselves out of them after having practically died, or at least having seen their horses die...

[texts]The Young Voyageurs - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
The heroes are the three boys whom we met in "The Boy Hunters" where they were off on a search for a white buffalo, which their father had requested. Now, however, their father has died, and the only relative they have is an uncle who works for the Hudson's Bay Company, in the very north of Canada. The uncle sends for them, and sends his own son to guide them over the Canadian part of the journey. This is the story of their journey from their original home in the south of the U.S.A., many thousa...

[texts]The Tiger Hunter - Captain Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-83)
Strictly speaking this book is a free translation by Reid (1818-1883) of an earlier (1851) book by the Frenchman Luis de Bellemare (pseudonym of Gabriel Ferry, 1809-1852), "Costal l'Indien." The subject is the 1811-1812 Mexican War of Independence from Spain. Reid, having fought in the Mexican-American War of the 1850s, and having written books about the subject, would have wanted to make this excellent book available to an English-speaking readership, and his translation was published in 1861 w...

[texts]The Desert Home - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
This was one of the first books that Mayne Reid wrote. Its action takes place in a central part of North America, designated a Desert. Some people set out to travel in this central desert, when they somewhat lose their way. Luckily they eventually spot the light of a farm-house, where they knock and receive hospitality. Their kind host and his family then explain to them how they came to live where they do, and what a lovely place it is...

[texts]The Land of Fire - Captain Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-83)
As we are told in the Preface, this is the last book Reid wrote before his death in 1883. A young farm-boy walks down to Portsmouth, a port not too far away, and eventually gets taken on as a hand on an American barque, trading with the Pacific. Four years later he has risen to be second mate. But when rounding Cape Horn a severe storm overwhelms the vessel, and she is lost after springing a very bad leak...

[texts]Ran Away to Sea - "Captain" Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
Although this book seems to be very much like the sort of book Kingston wrote, it actually predates that author by a few years. It tells the story of a young boy, well brought up, who runs away to sea, despite his parents' wishes. Unfortunately he asks for a place on board a ship where many of the officers and crew are the vilest villains, and the trade they engage in is slaving, despite that trade having been banned half a century previously...

[texts]The Cliff Climbers - Captain Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
The book begins with two young brothers and an Indian guide, in a valley in the Himalayas, into which they had ascended with some difficulty in the preceding book--"The Plant Hunters". Unfortunately they find they cannot get out at the top of the valley, and they cannot go back the way they came. So they are stuck. They try various ingenious ideas for getting out, each of which appears as though it would work, but in the end does not, usually in a quite entertaining way...

[texts]The Boy Slaves - Captain Mayne Reid (1818-1883)
This is an excellent book, telling of the adventures of three midshipmen and a much older sailor from a British warship that goes aground off the coast of Africa, well offshore, and sinks with all hands. However these four find themselves afloat on a spar, which they paddle with their hands for several days until they reach the shore of Africa. Shortly after this they are taken prisoner by some Arabs, who intend to take them north to a town where they can be sold as slaves...
